The Executioner – By Maggie Nash

Blurb

A team building exercise at a remote location reignites the heat between former lovers Madeleine Smith and Nicholas Garabaldi. When team members start dying they must learn to trust again so they can outwit whoever is killing off the group one by one. Is this the “Executioner” from the indigenous Dream Time legend of the local Bilbulmun tribe? Or is someone closer to home responsible?

EXCERPT:

Nick breathed a sigh of relief when he heard the sound of the taxi driving into camp. She was here. Thank Christ! Flicking open the blind just a tad, his heart leapt at the sight of her climbing out of the car. If it was possible, she was even more beautiful than he remembered. Her dark, glossy curls hung down almost to her waist, and those long, tanned, shapely legs… Like a pre-programmed reaction, his cock swelled in remembrance of how she used to hook those muscular calves around his thighs as he pumped into her.

Down boy. There’s lots of work to do yet, focus on the prize at the end. Running his hand through his hair, he sighed. Oh yeah, and what a prize. Staying out of sight until at least tomorrow night so she would realize the camp actually was legitimate would be a challenge, but since Gary was taking the group out in the bush for most of the activities, he should be free to get ready for the evening. He planned to leave Maddie in no doubt that his feelings were real, and give her no choice but to let him back into her life.

Looking out the window again, he saw Maddie lean over to pick up her backpack. Three other team members raced to her side to help and he laughed softly. She always did have that effect on men, even though she never saw it herself. He didn’t feel any jealousy, though. He knew her well enough to know she wasn’t easily impressed by fawning males. She felt things deeply, which meant she probably still had feelings for him, although at the moment, the closest feeling to the surface was probably anger. After the weekend, if he had anything to say about it, that would radically change.
One last look showed her leading a procession along the fifty meters to her tent with the three adoring sycophants tripping over themselves to follow her in the faint hope she’d grace them with a gorgeous smile. He knew how they felt. He chuckled again as she shooed them away, entering her tent and closing the flap. Looking at his watch he thought about how exhausted she must be; the trip from Victoria to WA could be very tiring. She was probably too tired to join the group for dinner. He made a mental note to ask Gary to organize a tray for her. Just for tonight she could get the royal treatment.
Come tomorrow, Sweetheart, you’re going to learn all about survival of the fittest. A vision of her in tight shorts and t-shirt, swinging on a rope from one obstacle to another, got him hot all over again. He was going to enjoy every minute of watching her progress from the sidelines.

7 Bookish things about me

Oh thanks so much Heather for tagging me !

Here I go:

1. I used to read a book a day....sometimes more :-) But now I have this evil day job that keeps me so busy and tired that I am lucky to read a book every couple of weeks.

2. I hate books that have inaccurate information in them. If it's set in Medieval England they DON'T USE THE WORD "OKAY"! And as far as medical stuff...why don't people know that using peroxide on a wound is likely to cause more damage than good???

3. It really annoys me when I read a typo in a book, but some are worse than others. The other day I was reading a Nora book, and the name of the heroine was mistakenly replaced with the villains. It took me right out of the story! Sorry Nora...but hey, it is annoying :-)

4. I rarely get rid of my books. I keep most of them forever :-) . I can't bear to part with them, even if I have only read them once.

5. I am really picky about who I will lend a book to. I have leant so many books in the past to people who never give them back. I know that they don't mean it, and sometimes can't even remember borrowing them, but to me, a book is a precious item and I want to know it is going to come back.

6.I really really hate it when people turn down the corner of a page in a book. It destroys the paper over time! This is why I have a huge assortment of bookmarks, train tickets, business cards, postcards, or whatever is handy to use as a bookmark.

7. I refuse to read a series out of sequence. I have to do it in order or I can't read any of them at all.

Okay, now I think I am going to annoy my friends if I tag them again....so I might just call for volunteers :-)

Let me know if you want to take up the challenge and I will link to you :-)

"Stay here, I have to get something."

"Champagne?" Magda asked, grinning. "It is New Year's after all."

"Better."

He padded barefoot to his dropped jacket and found the small velvet box he'd left in his pocket. Box in hand, he crawled onto the bed, grinning.

"That better be something that will make me forget about champagne."

"It is, trust me." He handed her the box, which she took hesitantly.

"This isn't one of your practical jokes, is it?"

He laughed. "No, it's not. Open it, go on. I promise you, you'll like it."

"Renato!" she gasped, her eyes wide. "What…"

Smiling, he took her hands into his, squeezing them gently. "I am asking for your hand in marriage. I want you to be my wife."

She looked from the ring to him and back. "You want to marry me? Why?"

"Why? Because I love you. I can't picture my life without you. Did I mention the loving you part?"

She nodded her head, and tendrils of dark brown hair bounced around her face. "Oh my God, you want to marry me? Me?" She stared at the ring.

"Let me put it on you so you can see how it looks." He took the box and slipped the ring on her finger, admiring the way the gold and the creamy green stone contrasted with her tawny skin. "It was made for you."

"Do you need to hear the words?"

Renato opened his mouth, wanting to tell her yes, but she cut him off.

"Yes, I want to marry you and be your wife."

There were no words he could think to say, so Renato did the only thing he could think of. He took her in his arms and just held her.

"Do you want to go back to the party?" Magda asked.

"No. I just want to be here with you." Leaning back against the pillows, Renato closed his eyes. Magda pulled the covers over them. Renato's energy was now gone. Breathing slow and deep, he held her as a feeling of contentment took hold of him. Sleep soon followed.

* * *
Magda awoke with a start. Sitting up, she gently pushed away Renato's arms. Her body stilled as she waited for any sign that Renato had awakened. Relief flooded her when she felt him roll over, inhale deeply and then let out a snore. Shoving the covers away, she crawled down the bed. Not bothering to retrieve her shoes, she padded barefoot over the carpeted floor.

Strains of the party still in full swing could be heard through the floorboards. A glance at a wall clock told her it was four in the morning. There was very little time to waste. Picking up her skirt and what was left of the corset, she glanced back toward the bed, saying a silent good-bye to Renato. Magda wished she could tell him her reasons for leaving him but knew he would just want her to stay. The problem was no one could help her. Not even him.

Her parents were dead. All the family that remained was Paxton, her brother, and he had vanished after their father had died. Renato, despite his family's connections, didn't have the ties that the Guild had. They had offered her a once in a lifetime opportunity. In exchange for doing odd jobs for the members of the Guild, they would help her find Paxton. Her thoughts turned to the morning she had woken up to find him and all of his meager possessions gone. Her heart constricted. She had to find him. They were the only two now. The last of the Komodo Dragon shifters.

Magda didn't want to think of the possibility that she was the last of her kind. To have no one else who would understand what it meant to be a Komodo shifter? To be alone was unthinkable. Taking one more glance at the bed, her shoulders sagged. "Kali, why?" she whispered. "Why do I have to leave him when I just found him?"
