MONDAY MAGIC - Paula Roe - What is sexy?

What is Sexy?

So I was watching TV last week, in particular the girly frenzy that is new boy band sensation, One Direction.  For those of you unfamiliar with them, these five young UK guys are in Australia and have been doing the morning talk show rounds.  Apparently they are "the biggest band in the world at the moment".  Hmmm.   So, anyway, as I ran on the treadmill and watched the huge screen, I caught myself smiling a few times. Yes, they're all extremely cute, all seemed incredibly humbled by the thousand-strong turnouts and all sounded articulate, smart and aware of the realities of their fickle music business.  Pretty sexy, I must admit (yes, yes, I'm old enough to be... well, their older sister.  A girl can still appreciate men, no matter what their age!)

So cut to the TV screen on the right (my gym has five of them).  V Hits. Music videos all day, every day.  And at this time, juxtaposed against the cute sexiness that is One Direction was... Lady Gaga.  And her film clip, Alejandro.

Complete with simulated sex, hip thrusts and the in-your-face stuff that Lady G is renowned for.  Did I think that was sexy? Nup.  Nor was the next clip - Madonna's Girl Gone Wild (yeah, she's humping a wall - WTF is that??)

I just sighed, shook my head and wished girls would put their pants back on.

Yes, 'sexy' is totally subjective, I know.  I may think this gratuitous shot of David Beckham is smokin' sexy, you may not.  On the flipside, I loathe Robbie Williams but have friends who adore him.  So what's my take on sexy?  A hint of subtly, not a sledgehammer's worth.  Showing a little flesh and leaving something to the imagination.  Clothes that look about to fall off.  A pair of smoldering eyes, or an embrace shot in perfect light.  Sexy to me isn't a full-on bump and grind (which is why I will never buy anything by Nikki Minaj or Rhianna - sorry!), nor is in your face, look-at-me raunch.

Sexy was the car boot George Clooney/Jennifer Lopez scene in Out of Sight.  Sexy is Adele's Rolling in the Deep and Phil Collin's In the Air.  It more Christina Hendricks than Megan Fox.  It's this gorgeous shot I tagged on Pinterest.  Yes, it can be minus clothes, but more often than not, not ;-)  Sexy are these few choice pictures.  That’s why full frontal nudie mags like Playgirl never worked for me.  Good for a giggle, but I thought guys looked much sexier with pants on... or about to fall off ;-)

So what's your definition of sexy?  Any particular actor/actress?  A picture?  Share with us and you could win a copy of my sexy read, The Billionaire Baby Bombshell.

Thanks for being her Paula. I so agree. Sexy is more subtle than in your face.

Sexy for me is having someone really understand me. Like the way Fritz (Jon Tenney) understands Brenda (Kyra Sedgwick) in THE CLOSER. I get goosebumps every time I see a scene with them...

*sigh*

I am liking Liam Neeson at the moment - his voice is sooooo sexy

There was a shot doing the rounds on Facebook yesterday with George Clooney in earnest conversation with Barak Obama. Now that's sexy.

Maggie, I LOVE The Closer! Just bought the 1st season on sale :-) I also love the way they've written the characters and how they've developed and grown through the seasons. Such fab writing!

Paula Roe said...

Ariane, I think Liam Neeson is one of my fave actors. I adore everything he's been in and yes, that sexy voice is yummy :-)

Two powerful, attractive men having an intelligent conversation - I'm there, Keziah!

Cute topic and I had to smile at your comment Maggie, as my husband won't even be in the same room if Kyra Sedgwick is on the screen, with or without Tenney, which again proved Paula's point that our response to 'sexy' is completely subjective.

So, me? Flat images (photos) have rarely seemed sexy to me and those pics that do the rounds, have never stirred me.

On covers I find setting and babies sexier than bare chests - which probably makes me weird. The big one for me though, is repartee. That's what I find sexy - that quick-fire, witty dialogue that shoots between two characters who've got their chemistry on but haven't yet admitted to it.

I bought the complete set of 'Moonlighting' DVDs for just that reason and it's the same reason I bought a copy of 'Speechless'.

Going back even further, Grant and Hepburn had it in 'The Philadelphia Story'.

Apart from this though, I must say I agreed with everything Paula said, and figure we must have similar sexy barometers.

Hmm - just thinking my answers are very subdued for a smokin' hot site like this,;-) - must be why I write YA... Oh wait! No there's something I find incredibly sexy: young love; first love. Heart-swelling, sweet, passionate... Sigh...

Oops. Did I just admit to being a Cougar!!!! Totally not true!!!

Great post, Paula - I enjoyed the fun. Thank you!

I'm completely with you Paula, on the modern apparent demand for rauch, raunch all the time. It is just unattractive and I worry about the young girls growing up with that as an example. But to answer the question...

Intelligence and talent are sexy. Humour is sexy. Mathmeticians who write and sing funny songs about maths http://youtu.be/UTby_e4-Rhg. Dead sexy, for me!

Of course, looks are nice, but I'm with Kaz - the flat pictures seldom do it for me. Give me presence and focus. Intense focus is very sexy. David Tennant is VERY good at that and I think that's why he's so attractive in his roles. Now, if I can just work out how to write what he does on screen...

Thanks Paula and Maggie!

I have a whole page on my website dedicated to the men I find sexy and it grows at a fairly steady rate (and yes, most of them are clothed, although oddly enough the ones who aren't are actual friends of mine ;) Some are there because of their eyes, some for their mad abs, some for their tattoos but most of them are their because of their voices. For me, a man's voice is the sexiest thing in the world. Top 3 in order are: Crispin Freeman (Alucard from the anime Hellsing); Ron Perlman (Hellboy); Clancy Brown (The Kurgan).

I agree with the voice thing. So long as a man isn't actively disgusting to look at, if he has a voice I'm in. Liam, Alan Rickman, Jeremy Irons, James Mason, Sean Connery (Scottish and English). The nekked thing. Well naked is anatomy, in the process of getting naked, that's sexy...

I agree Paula. That car boot scene was great. Michael Fassbender in Jane Eyre!

"ooh ooh!" Waving hands madly at Teacher. Pick me! Yes - voice! Now voice is sexy. I grant you that.

Interestingly, I remember my mum saying years ago when I was a kid, that Tom Selleck wouldn't make it the stratosphere level of stardom and I argued that he was gorgeous. Mum simply said, 'not with that voice...'

I've often wondered if she was right...

God - I'm sounding ancient today...

Hi Paula sexy for me a smile that is ohhh so melting my heart :). The actor I defined sexy today is William levy from dancing with the stars at USA :). Ok, now I have to admit sexy is also the Greek god body William levy has:), arethazhenATrocketmailDOTCOM

Intense focus is very sexy, Imelda. I've seen a few actors do it well, and when they do, their hair and eye colour, build, and age seen secondary to their sexiness. And definitely with you on subtlety, Paula. For me, the promising sparkle in a man's eyes is the sexiest thing out.

Jennie Brumley said...

Kaz, Magnum PI was pretty sexy. I know I had a crush on him! LOL. But you have to remember that while looks fade, voices mature. And voice can be described in so many wonderfully sexy ways:

The whisper of his dark voice caressed her earlobe as his hands caressed her...etc, etc...

And Michael Fassbender in anything is pretty darn sexy!

Paula, Maggie and Ladies.

Agreed, with most of what was said.

1. Voice - Sexy for me is definitely voice. That's my undoing. Love deep and masculine sounding voices. Not ones that sound like you've got the man by the (bleep, censored) B&!!$.

2. Smell - a nice smelling man is sexy as hell. Lurv aftershave but not when a man reeks of it. Sense of smell is important. Let's face it a man with BO is not sexy.

3. Attire - a well dressed man is sexy. Just thinking about taking the layers off. Woo too steaming.

I know we post beefcakes occasionally on Facebook for our inspiration but truthfully our sense of what we really desire is much more divergent from just the beefcakes.

Oh and sweet little nothings like a brush of cheek, that pass between lovers. Now that's sexy.

Efthalia said...

Oh and that was supposed to be woo hoo. I hate auto correct.

Paula Roe said...

Sweetie, we can be cougars together! LOL (Zac Efron is looking hella HOT these days!)

Paula Roe said...

Ooh, don't get me started on my rant about the raunch culture, Imelda!

Love David Tennant :-). And I have a huge crush on the geeky dudes at www.vat19.com (watch all their videos before you check out the party gummy bear song - hilarious!!!)

Paula Roe said...

Jen, how can you bypass Vin Diesel?? That guy's voice was just made to melt a woman's willpower!

Paula Roe said...

Hey Fi! Just been watching Journey to the centre of the Earth with a very yummy James Mason :-) And I love Richard Burton's cultured voice - totally makes that War of The Worlds soundtrack :-)

Paula Roe said...

I'm ashame to admit I've never seen Michael Fassbender! Shall have to google him...

Paula Roe said...

Ooh, now a smile is sexy! It can make an average looking guy totally hot :-)

Paula Roe said...

Yep, totally agree with all of that! And I'm surprised uniforms hasn't been mentioned - love me a cute guy in uniform!

Paula Roe said...

That's the key to a convincing performance, I reckon. I've had crushes on lots of actors that aren't *gorgeous* per se, but man, when they direct the focus... Smolder!

Paula Roe said...

Which is why I love just *looking* at that David Beckham picture, Kaz ;-)

Jennie Brumley said...

Paula, Vin is definitely in my Top 10! Vin Diesel in the original Pitch Black (especially near the end when it's raining and he tackles Radha Mitchell to the ground)... now THAT'S sexy!

Other sexiness attributes include:
The shape of a man's mouth.
The size and feel of his hands.
His attitude.
His sense of humour.
His mind.

I could go on but I think I'll go watch Pitch Black now...

Jennie Brumley said...

Actually, you know, reading back through all the comments and all the stuff we find sexy...

I'm keeping a close eye on my husband when you ladies are around!

I find a man behind the most appealing. But since you can only see those walking away. the first thing I notice is their eyes. You can tell a lot about a person by their eyes. I then look at their mouth, love a sexy kissable mouth. I then look for tattoos, very sexy. I also like a guy with a sexy-deep voice. Like a man with a sense of humor and to be playful and not mind getting teased.
I work front desk at a hotel and we get lots of business men and construction men in. I have seen some pretty sexy ones come and go.
Thanks for the great giveaway.

Paula Roe said...

Chris, you are one lucky duck, seeing all those construction guys ;-)

I reckon a guy comfortable in his own skin, one who doesn't think he's a Studly James, is pretty darn sexy.

And you know, the same goes for girls. High maintenance, lots of make up, ultra skinny, inappropriate dressing, talking about how fat they are - so not sexy.

Fiona Marsden said...

I should have mentioned. History, I broke with DH when we were going out together. Then I saw him in a kilt. Been married 30 years. Nuff said.
