Monday Magic - Gabriella Hewitt

Gabriella Hewitt – Out of the Shadows Blog Tour

What scares you?

There are some pretty scary mythological creatures in the Aztec lore. In OUT OF THE SHADOWS, there are a few monsters bent on destroying humanity and the love of Carolina and Tomás.

One fearsome creature is the TZITZIMIME (don’t ask me how to pronounce it),  an ancient celestial being sent down to earth to destroy humanity and cultivate the souls and bodies of people who have lived evil lives or disobeyed the gods.

The other creature is the ancient serpent god, XIUHCOATL: A deity known as the Fire Serpent and God of Drought. He threatens to extinguish the world with his mighty fire breath.

Both are frightening and have immense power.  Now Aztec deities were neither completely bad nor completely good. They ostensibly offered their human servants protection and continued life in exchange for sacrifice and human blood to survive.  Appeasing the gods dominated the day to day Aztec life.

As a child I used to read stories or listen to my parents tell me stories of creatures from their home countries. Freaked me out! I swear I used to look for monsters under my bed.

What mythological creatures scare you?

Most of my fears are based in the real world - some people are far more evil than anything from mythology.
But, I do admit to being afraid of monsters under the bed. (I broke my foot once leaping for my bed and missed)

I'm arachnophobic - sadly no mythology there - just real 8 legged creatures. I wish they were just myths!! :)

I Love the cover!! I don't know anything about Mythology sorry. But the pic which I'm assuming is the Fire Serpent is scary!!! The thought of something like that really being alive on earth. Yikes. lol

Hi Maggie! Thanks for the contest and guest author.

Hi Jacki,

OMG!! Breaking your foot. Now that is scary. I totally believe in monsters under the bed. As creepy as it may sound I actually have a 7lb hairless creature that chews bones under my bed. Yup, he is my Yorkie and he destroys pillows, disembowels dolls and chomps on lego pieces and leaves their carcasses under my bed. LOL

Kaetrin - Have you seen the movie Arachnid & Arachniphobia both horrifying movies. Personally love the little creepy crawlies b/c they eat the plethora of moths that engulf my home during the summer.

The spider plays a huge part in meythology too.

In Greek mythology there is the story of Arachne. A beuatiful and talented seamstress who thought her designs the most beautiful in all the heavens and earth. She boasted how she was even more talented than Athena. Well the goddess heard her bragging and thought to teach her a lesson. so she challenged the young woman to a looming contest. teh best woven tapestry would be heralded. They sat at the loom and wove. Athena used the colors of the rivers, sky and earth to make her design and her rug was vibrant with life. Arachne lost and was turned into a spider. And that is why the spider weaves such beautiful webs.

I love reading mythology! It's so much fun to incorporate strange beings into my writing, and one of the best parts is getting to read the books in the children's section of the library. Such great pictures! One of the scariest creatures to me is the Gorgons, because they are both beautiful and deadly.
